T-Fal Actifry Low-Fat Multi-Cooker and Fryer

Having worked in countless kitchens over the years frying all sorts of everything I will be the first to say that deep fat fryers are not the most glamorous of kitchen appliances. After years of handling and cleaning stubborn grease we needed a big change and something more versatile as well as an appliance that is not so ugly that you want to hide it. I am writing this review after a year of use and am still as happy as when I purchased it. As well as the ease of cleaning and nice design health was the number one consideration. As well as this we needed a safer fryer for the house as we have numerous dogs, cats and children knocking about the house and after a near accident with a certain feline trying to escape out of the window whilst nearly frying the end of her tail we felt the time had come to move onto new pastures.

The machine comes apart bit by bit for cleaning and comes back polished clean in either the sink or dishwasher. This made a large impression on us after years of scrubbing gnarly grease this was a doddle. Safety was another major concern our old fryer was an accident waiting to happen, litres of boiling oil, spitting and dangerous to go near and demanding constant attention. This is where the automatic timer became very useful as well as the feature of not having to stir chips in boiling hot oil which definitely has its positive points :) The paddles inside the machine do the work for you and you can actually leave the room if you want and wait for an alarm and not worry that you may have burnt the house down.

Size and Capacity

I have found that at full capacity the T-Fal Actifry Multi-Cooker Fryer is suitable for a few of us  but when friends come round we have to do a couple of fry sessions which is no problem but we wish it could be a size bigger. Having said that it does take up quite a large space on the surface but fits in with its nice and modern design. Another problem I have had with our previous fryers is that the oil blurs the plastic viewing screen but because of the large fan this remains clear. Even in a permanent spot in the kitchen the boiling oil does not stick to and stain the walls like our old ones did. It does not leave the stale odour of fried food and used oil in the room either.

Practicality and Ease of Use
It is rare for a product to actually live up to its statements- 1 spoon of oil they say The Tefal ActiFry Fryer  does. I was lost for words when it fried the lot with a spoon full of oil. This feature is unbelievably economical and our oil consumption has decreased vastly. As well as this we are not consuming the fat and literally using what we need, with just one spoon full it has become more economical to use higher quality extra virgin olive oils instead of vegetable oils. Not only does this dramatically change the flavour but is not bad for your body. Never would I have thought I would cook a healthy dessert in a frying device but the day has come the recommended cinnamon and apples went down a treat and did not lose its nutrition and flavour but remained wholesome and thoroughly enjoyable. It is a refreshing change to enjoy some of our favorite foods without the worry of fat content as well as disposing of masses of oil.

Time

I think the time to wait for the chips is reasonable, I often leave the skins on and chuck them right in and go into the lounge kick back and read a book or listen to music and wait for the alarm. Another benefit is that you do not need to wait for the litres of oil to heat which can take forever so 35 minutes is not a long time.

We also found the story of tefals origins story rather amusing with the fishing rod adjustments  :) Overall we are very pleased with this purchase, the delivery was prompt and efficient. We spent some time worried after reading certain reviews about numerous faulty models, we have had no trouble with faults but recognize the problem and are always aware especially with children and pets about. For a machine with so many functions it is incredibly easy to use and works logically rather than some of the obscure functions of other modern appliances. We have begun to use it for all sorts frozen veggie sausages in the morning, stir fry’s and fried rice. It has definitely become an economical and healthy move to convert to a more efficient appliance and to stop in my view wasting such a valuable resource as oil. With any modern gadget appliance you really have to think outside the box and use it for more than just frying chips.
